The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the concept of Sustaining Peace, as outlined in Security Council resolution 2282 (2016) and General Assembly resolution 701262, are complementary and mutually reinforcing. Sustainable development underpins sustainable peace and more peaceful and inclusive societies create an environment conducive to sustainable development. Sustainable peace is both an enabler and an outcome of sustainable development.

12:00 PM - 01:00 PM        (CR.8) The water-food nexus: tackling water scarcity in the context of sustainable development - Technical Briefing.
The technical briefing will discuss how countries can address the dilemma of food production under limited water availability. Dr. Pasquale Steduto, FAO Regional Strategic Programmes Coordinator for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) will present the FAO NENA Water Scarcity Initiative, that provides a comprehensive framework to ensure the sustainable use and preservation of scarce water resources. While the briefing focuses on the experience of countries of Western Asia and North Africa, findings are applicable and relevant for all countries facing water scarcity, thus will provide a platform for sharing knowledge and showcase examples from other regions as well.
