09:30 AM - 12:15 PM        (GA Hall) International Day of Peace 2016 - Student Observance
Organised by the Education Outreach Section of the United Nations Department of Public Information, the annual student observance for the International Day of Peace was held in the General Assembly Hall for the first time. It brought together a record number of some 1800 students, celebrities, diplomats and representatives of civil society and the media to discuss this year's theme: “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace”. Moderated by Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas, the event featured a film screening by Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio and performances by renowned violinist Midori, the Rainbow Choir of Korea and hip hop artists Ike Ramos and Nitty Scott of Flocabulary.  Students at the UN Peacekeeping Missions in Cyprus and Liberia joined by video link.

In the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Madeleine of Sweden, an exceptional group of global leaders will convene at the United Nations to discuss the unprecedented opportunity that new global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework provides to focus on the world’s most vulnerable children.
These leaders will include representatives of governments, United Nations agencies (Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO and Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UNFPA), artist Maestro Andrea Bocelli, actor Forest Whitaker, Ambassador Dho Young shim and Professor Jeffrey Sachs (the SDG Advocates of the UN Secretary General), civil society and private sector leaders (including Kees Kruythoff of Unilever and Paul Sistare of Atlantica Hotels International).
The event will include a performance by “Voices of Haiti” children’s choir from Haiti, a project supported by the Andrea Bocelli Foundation.

03:00 PM - 04:15 PM        (TCC) Appointment Ceremony of Ms. Nadia Murad Basee Taha As UNODC Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking on the Occasion of the International Day of Peace.
Ms. Murad, a 23 year-old Yazidi woman and Nobel Peace Prize nominee who survived trafficking at the hands of ISIL, briefed the UN Security Council in the first-ever session on human trafficking, which was held during the presidency of the United States on December 16. 2015. She described being rounded up with fellow Yazidis in Iraq in 2014, and witnessing as ISIL fighters shot men and boys in cold blood. She was subject to grave abuses at the hands of ISIL fighters, and bought and sold various times.
