The event will provide a platform for UN Member States to present best practices to safeguard and empower the family, in accordance with their international obligations. A broad representation of international civil society organizations and family policy experts will provide their experience on how best to protect and promote the family both in the field and within the UN system, especially in the context of the 2030 Agenda.

29 May is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
At 9:45 the UN Secretary-General will lead the inaugural ceremony for the Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage. Following that, at 10 a.m. the UN Secretary-General will preside over a ceremony at which the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal will be awarded posthumously to 128 military, police and civilian personnel who lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping operations during 2015.
