In 2013, there were 232 million international migrants. Remittance flows in 2012 reached $401 billion—nearly four times the $126 billion in official development assistance. Migration can bring substantial benefits, but can also have negative consequences. Both developing and developed economies need migrants to meet the demand for workers with different levels of skills.
Given the many opportunities and challenges presented by international migration, the United Nations is convening a High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development on 3-4 October to bring
Member States, UN agencies, civil society groups and others together to consider actions towards making migration work.
The purpose of the High-level Dialogue is to identify concrete measures to strengthen cooperation and enhance the benefits of international migration for migrants and countries alike and its important links
to development, while reducing its negative implications.
